Q: What is the difference between a Porsche Targa and a Porsche Carrera ?
Hi,

What is the difference between a Porsche Targa and a Porsche Carrera ? I know that the Carrera is more powerful but are there any other differences ?

Thank You,

Marco

A: Depends on the specifics… though in some cases, a Porsche could be both a Carrera and a Targa. Both names have their origins in specific races where Porsche enjoyed a great deal of success (Carrera Pan America and Targa Florio).

The Carrera name originally came into use by Porsche to refer to cars that were their ultimate performance offerings, and at that time, outfitted with the 4 cam engines. This was then expanded to use with cars like the Carrera GTS (904) and Carrera 6 (906), which were essentially race cars offered for street use for homologation purposes.

The real mark of the Carrera name moving into more recognized use when Porsche introduced the 911 Carrera RS in 1973. The RS was introduced as a homologation base for the RSR and was very much the ultimate version of the 911. In subsequent years, the Carrera was offered as the top model in the 911 series, as well as appearing with the 924 Carrera GTS and GTR versions. In the mid-1980s Porsche began to market all of their 911 models as Carreras. This has continued on through subsequent models like the 964, 993, 996, and current 997. While they are often referred to as 911s, they are marketed by Porsche as the Carrera.

The 911 Targa was introduced in 1967. Due to concerns about body rigidity, the 911 hadn’t been offered as a Cabriolet. The Targa was in essence, a Cabriolet with an integrated roll bar that provided the needed structure for the unibody (it had a removable top that sat in front of the roll bar, and a soft plastic fold down window behind). A few years later, the soft plastic window behind the roll bar was replaced with a wrap around glass window, creating what most people recognize as a 911 Targa.

The Targa was produced in this fashion on through the 964 models. It has been produced on and off since, although the versions from since have instead featured a retractable roof that runs from the A Pillars all the way to the back window (still retaining the same side lines as the coupe).

The Porsche 914 models also had Targa roofs, but were not referred to as Targas in terms of model designation. The Targa was a body style offered in the 911 and Carrera model lines (along with Coupe; Cabriolets have been offered since 1983).

So in many years, both Carrera and Targa could refer to the same car.

Q: My convertible Porsche has roof leaks, has this happened to anyone else with a soft top?
I own a Porsche 911 2004, model 996. It is a convertible, and I have not been having problems with the roof until I got a hard top put on it, which leaked constantly, so I took I got it taken off. However, now even the soft top leaks, especially when I wash the car, or there is rain. Does anyone know people who have this problem with their convertible, and any solutions? Does anyone have this same problem? Thank you so much!

A: Have all of the top seals checked. Some of them may be drying up, which would not allow a good seal. You may also want to check to make sure the windows are properly aligned in the regulator.

In addition, if I rememeber right, that car slightly lowers the window when you open the door. You may want to check to see if that mechanism/feature is working properly.

Good luck!!!

Q: What is the difference between a porsche and a porsha?
What is the difference between a porsche and a porsha?

I just wanted to know. Any help please.

A: The car is a “Porsche”.

While “porsha” is the phonetic spelling of it.

Q: How much time does it take for the Porsche to catch the Honda?
Two cars, a Porsche and a Honda, are traveling in the same direction, although the Porsche is 184 m behind the Honda. The speed of the Porsche is 23.9 m/s and the speed of the Honda is 17.9 m/s. How much time does it take for the Porsche to catch the Honda? [Hint: What must be true about the displacements of the two cars when they meet?]

A: Hey!

Here’s the entire answer to your question.

Let’s first identify the values we’re given:

d = distance Porsche is behind Honda = 184 m

V = speed of Porsche = 23.9 m/s

v = speed of Honda = 17.9 m/s

The “hint” in the problem asks what must be true about the displacements of the cars when they meet? Well, the displacements must be EQUAL if they meet:

displacement of Honda = displacement of Porsche

or

d(Honda) = d(Porsche)

Now let’s figure out what these displacements are. Assume that the INITIAL position of the Porsche is d = 0. Then:

d(Honda) = d + v*t

d(Porsche) = V*t

Now we equate these two values:

d + v*t = V*t

Here t = time, which is what we’re solving for. Rearranging terms to solve for t:

t = d / (V-v)

= 184 m / (23.9 m/s – 17.9 m/s)

= 30.66 seconds

So the Porsche will catch up to the Honda in 30.66 seconds. That’s your answer!

Q: How would I install a metal hood ornament on a Porsche without drilling holes?
My dad’s always had a decorative horse on his Cadillac’s and just bought a Porsche Cayenne. Is there some extremely strong double sided tape or High powered magnet system available. I don’t want it to get stolen or to fly off on the highway? Drilling holes in the hood of a Porsche would really hurt the value

A: they make a really strong emblem adhesive ask for it at an autoparts store

Q: Question regarding importing a Porsche Boxster to the Philippines?
I want to sell (import) a Porsche Boxster to the Philippines, and it is a right-hand drive. So my question is can i import this car and how much is the shipping cost from the UK?
This is a 1998 model.

A: It will cost around $600-$800.

Q: What city is the guy overlooking at night in the Porsche commercial?
It’s the commercial where he revs his engine and there are people reving their Porsche engines all over the city.

A: I think it looks over LA

Q: How comfortable & quiet is a Porsche Boxster on long distance motorway journeys?
Calling all Boxster owners – I’m thinking of buying a Porsche Boxster but I’d only really use it for a 200 mile journey I do twice a week. I’ve a Jag X-type at the moment – would I find the Boxster much noisier and a rougher ride?

A: I’m sorry you can’t afford a 911.

Q: Do you know why the Porsche homelink system wont work after replacing a dead battery?
the LED won’t even light up. Is there a fuse or a reset button for the Porsche homelink system? The dealer should have reset everything after installing the new battery
Actually, the led won’t even blink, meaning that I can’t reprogram it. And manual only explains how to program it. I will just take it to the dealer. Thanks.

A: Yes i do know

Q: How can I stop my Porsche 911 door from rattling?
I recently purchased a 02′ Porsche Targa and the passenger side door rattles. When I press on the door it will cease from rattling but other than that it is pretty constant. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A: you have lose bolts… take the interior of the door apart and tighten any bolts on the inside… then when putting the door back together, tighten all the screws down tightly.

Q: How can Porsche claim 28,000 victories in motorsports?
Porsche claims to be the most successful motorsport marque in the world, with more than 28,000 victories. This mean that, from the foundation of the brand to this day, Porsche won 360 races/year. But when searching for Porsche victories in famous categories, it is very hard to find much more than 20 Porsche victories a year. How is this number possible?

A: Motorsports is a large category… while there are a few large events here in my area in which Porsche competes (ALMS, Speed GT, Speed Touring, Porsche Cup, Rolex, etc) that would total around 10 Opportunities a year for wins (multiples in one event possible due to multiple classes running in many races). Add to this the range of SCCA and NASA races in the area, from major events like the 25 Hours of Thunderhill down to weekends at any of the regional tracks, and you are looking at ~150 races, of which Porsches probably run in 1/3? Then factor in the PCA Club races and POC races, where a Porsche will always win since there are no other marquees competing, and you have up to 60 potential victories a year before you even get to Time Trial or Solo II events (if you include those, you have another 30-40 events).

Now, if you were to expand those numbers statewide, we’d be up around 300 or so total events a year. Nationwide? 2000-5000 or around there… worldwide? While you should be getting the picture by now, and that is just each year! Porsche has competed in various motorsports since it’s start, and has run up a massive victory total in major races. And given it’s long popularity among amateur ranks, coming up with a number like 28000+ would be very easy.

Q: How much would it cost for a complete oil-filter & transmission fluid change on a Porsche boxster S?
Considering i will be using mobil 1. Also, does any good oil change shop do this job on my Porsche or just a porsche specialized shops ?

A: Personally, I do all my changes myself, so my prices are a bit off.

Simple stuff like this can be done at any shop. Its very basic work. Porsches tend to take a rather silly amount of oil (granted the oil needs to be changed every ~15k miles or so, so its not half bad!). the 3.4L 996 engine used 9.25!!! quarts of oil. My GT2 takes about 13!!!!!!! Oil changes are pretty expensive on these cars simply because of that. The oil filters are also very expensive (about 15 bucks a pop).

the 250-300 dollar mark sounds about right for this and a tranny flush.

after you get your tranny fluid swapped when you first get the car (always a good idea), you really shuoldnt have to do it again. Use a good synthetic gear oil too. Doing it every oil change is just a waste of cash.

Based on what paul S said, maybe you do want to bring it to a porsche mechanic. Theyre pretty easy to find. contact your local PCA and theyll be more than happy to point you to a good one.

also: heres a tip: Most dealers WILL drop the price on parts/labor/whatever if you just ask. Seriously. Also many give discounts to porsche club of america members (my dealer is 10%). All I have to do is just ask them what i can get the part for vs the MSRP of it, and they usually drop a huge chunk off. Dont get oil changes done at a dealer though. They charge you like 250 bucks for a freakin oil change.

hey PaulS: could I get your email address? If you dont wanna post it on here, email it to me at Phanofmuzik@gmail.com.

Q: How much is car insurance on a new 911 gt2 Porsche?
I am a 25 year old who recently became very successful in the automotive industry and I decided I wanted to get a Porsche. Now i know about how much it is to keep a Porsche maintained because i have worked on them but i am not sure on the insurance. Please help anyway you can. And for the record i am not getting a quote from any website because i do not feel comfortable giving away personal information to an insurance company before i decide to use them.

A: It will cost you $274.37 a month.

Q: What is the overall length of the Porsche 912?
I am looking to transport said vehicle. The model year is not specified. It looks to be an ‘83? I am really good at guessing a cars model year just by the look, but with the Porsche that can be tricky. (Depending on the model.) I am sure that the length of the car is similiar throughout its manufacturing history.

A: There was no 912 made in 1983; there are three different 912 bodies:

The early short wheel base cars are about 162″ long (these were produced from 1964-1967). When the wheel base was lengthened, the overall length of the 912 grew to about 164″ (these were the models produced in 1968 and 1969). The 912 was again produced as the 912E in 1976, with this model being 169″ long.
