Due to higher gas prices I’ve recently decided not to put in the 454 and instead just have the original 403 olds rebuilt in my 79 Trans am. I don’t have the tools to do this myself, so I am trying to get a ball park figure of how much this is going to run me for.
A: FYI, MPG won’t be much different for 454 from 403. Proper rebuild if you do it yourself with machine costs about 1500. If someone else does it all, probably about 3 or 4 grand.

I have a 79 Trans Am. It currently has a 403 olds with the automatic well i want to put a Pontiac 400 with the 4 speed transmission will that motor and transmission combination bolt right into the car as it is now?
A: your car can hold any modern 4 bolt main chevy engine you will have to make adjustments for the tranny and clutch and also normal lines such as break and fuel lines

I am about to buy a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am but the driver-side door on it is all rusty. Does anyone know where I can buy one, internet or otherwise? Would I only have to buy an outer door shell?

I dont have the original seats for the trans am and that is the car I am fixing up. I have a 78 camaro with original seats that can be redone
A: The floor pans should be identical, with the bolt hole locations in the exact same place. The seats should swap without incident.
Like the other post said, if you find out that’s a problem, the seat tracks should swap over between the two – the tracks will unbolt off the bottom – swap them over.
Q: How much does it cost to rebuild a T350 transmission for my 79 Trans am?
Since I don’t have my own tools and I’m very clueless about transmissions, I am wondering how much a shop would run me for on this.
A: You are better off finding a used or rebuilt one. Will be cheaper.

lets say you are a student with a ‘79 trans am and you live a few miles from the school, drive there 6 days a week back and forth, and a few days a week drive about 30 mins to nearby locations.
Also is it a bad idea to drive a ‘79 trans am in an area where you get snow, even if only a few miles?

It’s the original red paint but I think it looks ugly. It already has black leather interior and I want to paint it the bandit colors but I like the ‘77 firebird decal more. Would it be frowned apon to put the ‘77 decal on a ‘79?
A: go for it. its your car. if any one should have a problem with it, they can go buy thier own car and not put a decal on it

A: the same as it is in the vette. but it wont feel the same cause the trans am is much heavier. add a turbo or supercharger and get back that vette feeling and much more.
A new vette engine is gonna set you back around 18k plus more for trans and computer. Probably around 22k for all. Thats if you get a brand new aluminum ls7 motor. If you did that you would have one bad ass 79 trans am…check out this site for reference

Custom paint custom interior custum rims and suspension. This includes A/C and radiator and stuff like that. Also Performance Brakes anything and every thing except the engine transmission and rearend.
A: All depends on how bad the body is and if you have to replace body parts, a good custom paint job would be $10,000 alone.
